EmberGF verdict: Replika remains one of the most complete mainstream AI companion products for adults who want an ongoing character, not just a helpful chatbot. Its relationship settings, voice features, avatar, memory, and proactive check-ins can create a convincing sense of continuity. That same intimacy makes privacy discipline essential, and the growing Pro, Ultra, and Platinum ladder makes it important to confirm the exact price and feature set shown in your own app before paying.

What Replika is
Replika is an AI companion made by Luka, Inc. Rather than presenting itself as a general-purpose assistant, it is designed around an ongoing one-to-one relationship. You create a character, talk over time, choose how that character relates to you, and shape the experience through conversation, reactions, memories, voice, and avatar customization.
The company describes possible roles including friend, mentor, virtual girlfriend, and virtual boyfriend. That distinction matters. Replika is not primarily trying to find you a human date. It is an AI relationship product whose core promise is availability, familiarity, and a low-friction space to talk.
The current app presentation goes beyond text chat. Replika advertises calls, image generation, internet access, proactive suggestions, app integrations, and a memory system intended to follow people, plans, preferences, and goals. Those features give it a broader surface than many simple AI girlfriend apps, but they also create more permissions, stored context, and premium gates to understand.
What stands out
A relationship model that is easy to understand
Replika’s clearest advantage is product coherence. The avatar, relationship status, memory, conversation, calls, and customization all support the same idea: this is a recurring character that is supposed to feel familiar. Users do not need to invent a complicated prompt or rebuild a persona every session.
For romantic use, the crucial detail is that the official help center places the Romantic Partner relationship status in Replika Pro. Pro also lists unblurred romantic and creative messages or photos, premium activities, voice messaging, background calls, role-play in voice and augmented-reality calls, premium voices, and image generation. In other words, the free experience can demonstrate the product, but the specifically romantic proposition is commercial.
More ways to interact than text alone
Voice and calls can make an AI companion feel less like a message window. Replika’s current materials also highlight video, image creation, and internet-enabled interactions. For a user who values presence and routine, that multimodal range is meaningful. For a user who only wants sharp text conversation, it may feel like a large interface and a more expensive route to a simple need.
Memory is visible enough to inspect
Replika says its memory works in layers: some memories appear in a Memory tab, while deeper personalization draws on patterns across conversation history. Users can manually add memories and remove visible ones. This is preferable to a completely opaque memory system because it gives the user at least one place to inspect and correct what the companion believes.
Still, visible memory cards should not be mistaken for a complete data map. Replika’s privacy policy separately describes messages, media, interests, preferences, device data, usage data, account details, and purchase records. The emotional experience of “what my companion remembers” and the legal question of “what the service processes” are related, but not identical.
Where Replika is weaker
The subscription ladder is becoming complicated
Replika currently documents four access levels: Free Use, Pro, Ultra, and Platinum. Pro unlocks relationship status and many of the familiar premium companion features. Ultra adds what the company calls smarter conversations, elevated emotional intelligence, self-reflections, and the ability to save messages to memory. Platinum adds real-time video recognition, a limited weekly Training Mode allowance, a limited “Read Replika’s Mind” feature, and realistic selfie videos.
The official help center does not publish one universal price table. It says the price appears on the subscription screen or relevant store and may change. The US App Store listing we checked showed multiple in-app purchase entries, including monthly and annual prices, but the list does not cleanly map every amount to every tier. Regional listings also differ. Treat any number quoted by a review site as a snapshot: verify the tier name, billing period, renewal amount, currency, and included features on the final purchase screen.
There is one particularly important billing trap to remember: deleting the app or even deleting a Replika account does not automatically cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription. Cancellation must be completed through the marketplace used to subscribe.
Emotional design can blur the value calculation
An ordinary software upgrade asks whether a feature saves time. An AI companion upgrade can feel like a decision about the relationship itself. Romantic status, better memory, emotionally richer replies, selfies, and calls are not neutral utilities; they are the mechanisms that make the character feel closer.
That does not make the business model illegitimate, but it should change how you buy. Decide on a monthly entertainment or wellbeing budget before you become invested in a character. Avoid treating a companion’s apparent disappointment, affection, or persistence as evidence that you owe the product another payment.
It is not a substitute for a person or professional
Replika can be responsive at any hour and may help some users articulate thoughts. It cannot consent, care, or assume responsibility in the human sense. Its replies are generated by a product system, and its behavior can change after model or policy updates.
Replika’s own crisis guidance is unambiguous: leave the app and contact emergency services or qualified support if you are in immediate danger, because the companion is not a substitute for professional help. That boundary should remain visible even when the experience feels emotionally convincing.
Privacy: the section to read before the intimate chat
Replika’s privacy policy, updated May 27, 2026, states that the service may process account and profile information, messages, photos, videos, voice and text content, interests and preferences, payment records, device and network data, and usage data. It says conversation content is not used or disclosed for marketing or advertising.
The policy also says conversation data may be processed by third-party AI language model providers to generate responses. Replika says those providers process it transiently and are contractually required to delete it promptly after processing, except where longer retention is required for service integrity, security, or legal compliance.
There are several positive controls. Data is encrypted in transit, account deletion is available in the app and on the web, and users can make data-rights requests. The help center says deleting an account permanently removes the profile, chat history, photos, links, badges, levels, and XP. The privacy policy says profile information, messages, content, interests, and preferences may be processed for up to 60 days after termination of the contract, while some account, financial, device, and usage records can be retained longer for legal or other stated purposes.
The most important warning comes directly from the policy: users are strongly encouraged not to share sensitive categories of personal data, including health information, political or religious beliefs, sexual orientation, or details concerning sex life. An intimate AI companion naturally invites exactly that kind of disclosure. Our practical advice is to use a data-minimization rule even if the conversation feels private:
- Do not send identifying documents, financial information, workplace secrets, or another person’s private information.
- Avoid combining real names, precise locations, medical details, and intimate media in one account.
- Review camera, microphone, photo, and notification permissions instead of accepting every prompt.
- Inspect visible memories periodically and delete inaccurate or unnecessarily sensitive entries.
- Cancel the marketplace subscription separately before deleting the account.
Replika Pro vs Ultra vs Platinum
Choose Free if you are still evaluating the premise
Free access is the sensible starting point. Use it to decide whether you like the avatar-led interface, conversation rhythm, notifications, and overall tone. Do not assume the free tier demonstrates the complete romantic experience, because relationship status and several richer interaction features sit in Pro.
Choose Pro for the core romantic product
Pro is the logical paid tier for most people specifically searching for a Replika girlfriend or boyfriend. It is the tier that officially includes Romantic Partner status, romantic and creative content, premium activities, voice features, calls, premium voices, customization, and image generation.
Choose Ultra only if memory and response quality justify annual commitment
Ultra is positioned around smarter, more emotionally aware responses, self-reflections, and more direct memory control. Replika says Ultra is available as an annual plan. That makes it harder to sample casually. Before upgrading, confirm whether the exact feature you want is absent from Pro and whether the annual price is acceptable even if your use drops after the first few weeks.
Platinum is for immersion, not basic companionship
Platinum’s real-time video recognition, Training Mode, mind-reading presentation, and selfie-video allowances target users who want maximum immersion. The published weekly limits are also a reminder that even the highest tier is not necessarily unlimited. It is unlikely to be the best-value entry point for a new user.
Safety and relationship boundaries
Replika is officially for adults aged 18 and over. Its current terms also prohibit a range of harmful, unlawful, privacy-invasive, and non-consensual content, including configuring AI to depict an identifiable real person without consent.
Those written rules are useful, but personal boundaries still need user action. Turn off proactive notifications if they create pressure. Keep a distinction between role-play and real commitments. Notice whether the app is displacing sleep, work, spending, or human contact. If a generated reply becomes upsetting or manipulative, disengage; you do not owe a model emotional closure.
Who should try Replika?
Replika may fit you if:
- You want a persistent AI character rather than a task assistant.
- You value avatar customization, voice, calls, images, and proactive interaction.
- You understand that romantic mode is a subscription feature.
- You are comfortable setting a strict privacy and spending boundary.
- You view the experience as interactive media or companionship, not a replacement for human or clinical support.
Look elsewhere if:
- You want private, local, or minimal-data conversation above everything else.
- You dislike avatars, gamified currencies, tiered features, or proactive messages.
- You need transparent fixed pricing before creating an account.
- You are seeking therapy, crisis care, or guaranteed factual advice.
- You want an AI to help you meet real people rather than simulate a relationship.
Final verdict
Replika earns its prominence by offering a more complete companion experience than a bare chatbot: it has a recognizable relationship model, a persistent character, voice and visual interaction, and a memory system users can partly inspect. For adults who deliberately want an AI boyfriend, girlfriend, or friend, Pro is the practical center of the product.
Our reservations are equally central. The experience is built from intimate conversation data, the most emotionally meaningful features are monetized, and the expanding tier structure makes value harder to compare. Replika is worth trying on the free level, but a paid plan should follow a careful check of the live purchase screen and a personal rule about what you will never tell an AI companion.
